Fishing Comments = Avila Pier is located along the coast of Central California, at Port San Luis off Hwy 1 east of the city of San Luis Obispo. A variety of fish can be caught from the near shore areas. Most common are Perch, Jacksmelt, and small Rockfish and occassionally small Cabezon and Lingcod. During the summer and fall Pacific Mackerel, Jack Mackerel and Sardines move through the area. The best tides for surf fishing are the high tide period and one to two hours before and after the high tide. The best time is early morning and early evening and heavy surf makes fishing difficult. Surf fishing anglers typically use longer surf rods from 10 to 12 feet long and capable of casting heavier weights beyond the breaking surf. Heavy duty spinning reels are the usual reel found on these rods. Fishing weights vary little and are usually a multi-ounce pyramid sinker clipped on a drop rig with the bait and leader further up the line. Baits include live bait fish, blood worms, cut bait, and sand fleas. Artificial lures will work for schooling fish when they are feeding. Casting out from the pier may yield any of these species, but that area is often more productive for a variety of bottom species, fish such as Flatfish, Sharks and Rays. Occassionaly you may catch rock crabs and spider crabs or an occasional Octopus. Check local tackle shops or commercial charter boat operations to see what is currenlty in season and review California Ocean Sport Fishing Regulations booklet for seasons and bag limits.
